Let Us Say It Again: BSCAI Is Here To Stay!

We occasionally hear from a member, a vendor or someone in the industry that BSCAI intends to merge with another industry group. That is far from reality. In fact, it is not even on our radar.

The 45-year-old Building Service Contractors Association International fully intends to be here for another 145 years as the association for building service contractors. Yes, we have formed alliances with several organizations, most notably with the International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA); and we will continue to develop additional organizations where we share common interests, concerns and strengths. It is logical for us as an organization to develop ongoing relationships with other like associations that will contribute to our own best practices and value package for our members. We fully recognize the importance of maintaining and strengthening BSCAI’s unique identity separate, yet doing so among all cleaning organizations. Our focus is on providing the BEST possible results that benefit you, our members.

BSCAI’s board of directors has been aggressively working on revising and updating its vision and mission. We are calling it “Exploring Our Future.” In essence, it is total review of everything that BSCAI does. From education, certification, programs, services, conference, webinars and publications—everything is up for consideration. Each of these programs is being evaluated for its VALUE to all of our members, how can we improve upon we are already doing, what is new and important to the industry and our membership based on the current and future economy. Even what sacred cows should possibly be eliminated is on our agenda.

Keeping BSCAI members in front of the pack requires a clear sense of where our membership, markets, labor and industry are headed. We are now in a position to anticipate future trends and to respond proactively to our changing market.

Given that premise, the new proposed focus will be on four major strengths or “pillars” in the area of membership, networking, education and leadership development. You will be hearing a lot more about these initiatives in the coming months.

So the next time you hear, “What is BSCAI up to these days?,” answer loud and clear: continued growth and advocacy for the building service contractor.

BSCAI Membership Value Proposition
For more than 40 years, BSCAI has served as the membership association for building service and security contracting companies large and small. BSCAI’s core membership benefits services focuses on four key tenets:
• Increasing your bottom line
• Increasing your top line
• Reducing the risk of business
• Increasing professionalism through education and
networking

The concept is simple. As a member of BSCAI you have a network of nearly 2,000 building service and contract security executives who can serve as peer mentors to help your business grow, but also serve as members of a collective buying power. With your fellow BSCAI members you have access to programs that save you time, money and reduce the risks as a small or large business owner. BSCAI offers the following benefits to increase your bottom and top lines:
• Insurance programs and claims management
• Discounts on Sprint/Nextel
• Fleet management via ARI
• Discount purchasing — guaranteed to pay back your annual membership fee x2
• Health care
• Legal services
• Networking and peer groups
• Exposure to industry education and BSC industry leaders
• First Annual Convention attendance is FREE
• Webinars on key industry trends
• Volunteer teams to assist member companies facing crisis
• Mentoring/buddy systems
• And more…

So what makes BSCAI different than ISSA? BSCAI is unique. BSCAI offers networking events and education on a smaller scale with great intention. As a member you have the chance to really get to know your fellow members. With unique educational events like the CEO and Executive Seminars, coupled with the Annual Convention you have access to the best education around. Each agenda is built with purpose and addresses your business needs.

Further, BSCAI knows what we do best and that is education. Our library of books and materials is constantly being updated—and is done so by industry leaders to ensure that we have it right… all of the time.

Finally, BSCAI has a key alliance with ISSA—our member-free access to the ISSA/Interclean ® event every year— now that our events are paired up, your trade show attendance is included in your registration fee.

IN MEMORIAM: by Gary Penrod
Skip Marsden

Adrian “Skip” Marsden passed away on November 18, 2009 after a rich and full life dedicated to his family, the business he founded, and the industry he loved.

I first met Skip in the early 1970s when I was a BSCAI board member and Skip was its president. A seasoned and successful businessperson, Skip always had time to be a mentor to those of us that did not yet have his expertise or time in the industry. For years I thought that I was the exclusive recipient of his guidance, but as time passed, I realized that I was one among many. That was Skip!

Skip was colorful to say the least. Anyone in his presence, even for a little time, soon realized that his approach to the English language was truly unique.

I lost track of Skip for many years, but am grateful that our paths crossed again during the last decade of his life as we worked together on several business projects. My early impression of Skip was fortified during this period. Still astute, still colorful and still willing to share his considerable business acumen with those of us that cared to learn. To me, Skip remained the ideal of learned entrepreneurship, integrity and a model for all of those with whom he associated.  He remains my mentor.

Skip walked among many greats in the industry in which he was engaged for 60 years, but, at least for me, he was the greatest!
